Methods and Social Marketing

Goals

Within the EPODE programme, methods and social marketing approaches aim at mobilising local stakeholders within their daily activity (teachers, Local NGOs, catering services...) to promote healthy lifestyles and greater physical activity in everyday life, empowering families and individuals in a sustainable way.

Kick-off meeting, November 08, Paris

From this concrete experience, this committee aims at:

  • Produce and disseminate concrete guidelines regarding network expertise and social marketing approaches to set up and implement EPODE-like initiatives and regarding the profile of operational structures able to set up and manage an EPODE-like CBI network (including a central coordination and local project management):

    • Assessment of existing structures managing or having managed EPODE-like CBI networks (documentary search and interviews)

      • Private stakeholders (EPODE...)

      • Public stakeholders (North Karelia project, Colac study...)

    • Assessment of social marketing techniques and other methods in the framework of EPODE-like CBIs

      • Definition of social marketing, organization and network sciences in the framework of an EPODE-like CBI

      • Assessment of the input of the above sciences in a public health programme and more specifically childhood obesity prevention (documentary review)

      • Selection and critical analysis of existing methods used for EPODE-like programmes (documentary search and interviews)

  • Publishing the guidelines

  • Disseminating the guidelines and results of the work group

  • Facilitate the appropriation by relevant identified teams of specific methods and social marketing techniques applied to healthier lifestyles promotion.

  • Ensuring understanding and awareness of key opinion leaders in each country, about the benefits of the implementation of EPODE like programmes

Membership

  • Prof. Luis Moreno (chairman) assisted by Dr German Vicente - Zaragoza University

  • Permanent members: coordinating team representatives, members of EPODE/THAO/VIASANO coordinating teams, DG SANCO representative, representatives of the other committees, qualified experts in the field

  • Invited experts, possessing specific experience in this field and giving punctual advice on topics previously defined by the permanent members.

The university team works throughout the year in collaboration with the coordinating team and once to twice a year, the committee members gathers within a meeting (5 meetings over the 3 years).

Main questions

This committee is in charge of defining the operational structure to create, implement and manage an EPODE-like CBI network, including a central coordination and local project management. It is also in charge of producing guidelines regarding the interest of network expertise and social marketing approaches within an EPODE-like programme.

A focus is made on the following topics:

  • What kind of operational structure(s) to coordinate an EPODE-like CBI network (Ad-hoc structure? Public or private? Central or Local? Competencies and human resources required?)

  • What type of message should be conveyed and how can action be structured?

  • How to modify everyone's lifestyle?

  • How to contribute to a long-term creation of group dynamics to change behaviours?

  • How to reach targets?

  • How to reach sensitive populations (low/middle socio-economic level populations, migrants...)

  • Traps of stigmatization

  • Additional topics that come up during working period

How it works?

For each of the four pillars or work packages: Political involvement, Scientific evaluation, Methods and Social Marketing and Public / private partnership, the work in progress will be discussed within its corresponding committee (once to twice a year).

The university team is responsible for the development of background papers, position papers and other related preparatory research activities based on literature reviews, interviews etc. and is in regular contact with the EEN coordinating team to share information, ensure consistency with overall activities and objectives.
